Macquarie Newsletter
From Susan's Desk

As we head towards the end of 2022, I've been reflecting on what a massive year it has been for our community and for the country.

We have experienced yet more storms, floods and Covid, and the war in Ukraine has pushed energy costs beyond what anyone has seen since the 1970s, all of which puts a strain on families and our community organisations.

We've worked hard to respond to these circumstances and deliver the things we promised to do in the May election to improve people's lives. In Parliament we've passed more than 60 pieces of legislation: 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave, which will actually save lives; our Secure Jobs, Better Pay Bill to get wages moving; a National Anti-Corruption Commission; cheaper medicines which kicks in from 1 January 2023; cheaper childcare and improvements to paid parental leave; and our significant investment in renewable energy.

And of course, just last week, Parliament sat an additional day so we could legislation to ease the cost of living by capping electricity and gas prices, and provide bill relief to small businesses and families – the details of which will now be finalised with State governments. To hear more about the speeches I made in last few weeks of Parliament, check the links at the end of this newsletter

Locally, the tender for the Hawkesbury Headspace has opened and it will be exciting to work with the community to see this come to life, and the consultation on the Hawkesbury's Veteran's and Families Hub also commenced this month.

In my role as Special Envoy for the Arts, I had the honour this month to announce the winners of the Prime Minister's Literary Awards, and it was particularly heart-warming to speak with the late  Archie Roach's granddaughter, Janaya, who was representing her family at the ceremony, where Archie's book "Tell Me Why" was shortlisted.

While we've delivered many key election commitments, I have no intention of slowing down in 2023, and look forward to working with community groups and other tiers of government to roll out our improvements.

You'll also start to see a lot more about the referendum on constitutional recognition through an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, an opportunity for us all to accept the generous gift of the Uluru Statement.

I hope you and your family are able to take break over summer and relax after a stressful few years. And if you're one of the many essential workers who are working on public holidays across this time, keeping our community safe, healthy and functioning, thank you.

My office will be closed from 21 December to 4 January, so my amazing team can take a break to be fresh for another big year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

VOLUNTEER GRANTS

Thank you to all the groups who provided an Expression of Interest for the Volunteer Grants 2022-23 round. Unfortunately there were many more EOIs than available funding. The groups who were nominated have submitted their formal applications to the Department. The processing of those applications will occur over the summer, with the expectation of funds being provided in Autumn 2023. For those groups who missed out, I will be looking for new funding opportunities that may arise in the New Year to meet your project goals.
