I welcome the Prime Minister’s confirmation that the 2026 Census will collect data about LGBTIQ+ Australians.

Like many, I was dismayed earlier this week at reports that this wasn’t to be the case. We have nothing to fear from seeking information and I made my views known to my colleagues.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has a key role in ensuring the data we have access to is as accurate as possible, to better inform policy decisions, and I look forward to the ABS following its normal processes.
