Federal Education Minister, Jason Clare, received a deep dive on what life is like for public high school
students in the Blue Mountains when he visited Blaxland High School this week.

Students from Blaxland and Springwood High schools led a meeting with the Minister and Federal
Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman, where they shared their priorities for public education.
Ms Templeman said the students did not shy away from delving into complex subjects.

“The students did not waste a second of their time with the Minister, and it was clear that they had a
genuine passion about creating a more equitable system for all students,” Ms Templeman said.
One important topic the Minister was keen to hear their views on was Labor’s social media age
verification commitment.

“It was great to hear the thoughts of students who could see the positives of young people using social
media for social connection and peer support, and also the negatives that come hand in hand until
people have a maturity to deal with it.

“There was a strong consensus that strengthening the opportunities for young people to connect in-person should be a priority.”

Minister Clare and Ms Templeman also met with principals, teachers, support staff, and P&C members
representing the recently-formed combined Blue Mountains P&C Association.

Minister Clare said it was a privilege to meet with students, teachers and parents at Blaxland High.
“It was great to hear directly from the impressive students of Blaxland and Springwood High Schools
and see the dedication of their talented teachers.”

Ms Templeman says the Blue Mountains is the essential location for anyone wanting to hear directly
from teachers.

“With more teachers per head of population than any other part of the country, education is an issue
front of mind for Blue Mountains residents.

“Both the Minister and I are products of public schools, I sent my own children to our local public school
and was a long-time member and president of the P&C, so I know how valuable these perspectives are
for developing education policy.

“I want to thank all the teachers, staff, students and parents who took time out of their already busy
days to meet with the Minister and me to discuss how we can better support our public schools.”
