GRANT OFFER – NOTHING BUT A PAYNE

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman MP has accused Senator Marise Payne of fobbing off calls to protect the gravesite of Sir Henry Parkes.

Ms Templeman was referring to Liberal Senator Marise Payne’s announcement on 15 November that she had ‘encouraged Blue Mountains City Council to apply for funding under the ‘Morrison Government’s Safer Communities Fund following the recent desecration of Sir Henry Parkes’ gravesite in Faulconbridge’.

“After seeing that Senator Payne had encouraged Council to apply, I looked again at the details assessment criteria for Round 5 of the program which we had distributed to constituents earlier this month,” Ms Templeman said.

“The devil is in the detail.

“Under Scott Morrison’s Prime Ministership, the types of projects eligible for funding under the Safer Communities Program have narrowed, so that it now only allows for projects that ‘face security risks associated with racial and/or religious intolerance’.

“While protecting Sir Henry Parkes’ gravesite may have fit the broad aims of the program when it was first established, under the narrow criteria of Round 5, Council’s chances of securing a grant appear slim at best,” she said.

“Sir Henry Parkes’ gravesite and the Corridor of Oaks are places of great significance, which need better protection from vandalism.

“The Federal Government needs to offer up a real solution, not send Council on a wild goose chase, applying for a grant it has next to no chance of getting.”
