HEADSPACE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER

HEADSPACE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER

Federal Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman has welcomed the announcement that a site has been found for the Headspace Katoomba satellite service, saying it’s needed more than ever.

“This is a location for Katoomba that should allow easy access by young people, and close links with other services based there,” Ms Templeman said.

“Being close to other services is particularly important because the model the Morrison Government is using is a satellite service, rather than a one-stop-shop, so the collaboration with other health and youth services is key.

“I am disappointed that there was no fast-tracking of the establishment of the service to help support people deal with the aftermath of bushfires, but with the consequences of Covid-19, it’s needed more than ever.

“We can’t ignore the facts - high job insecurity is associated with stress, financial distress and increased rates of anxiety and depression. And the link between unemployment, financial distress and suicide is well established.

“It’s now May, and like so many others, the under-25s have lost jobs and are facing an uncertain future.

“The Grattan Institute has estimated that 40 per cent of employed teenagers will lose work due to the pandemic, the highest percentage out of any age group in Australia. The second group most likely to lose their job are those in their 20s.

“So while I certainly welcome the fact that a site has been sourced for this service, it’s still months before there’s a Headspace whose door young people can turn to.”
